Student Projects by Shut It Down

The Good Men Project

The Good Men Project is a programme for male students that encourages them to develop the most positive qualities linked to masculinity, such as empathy, courage, strength, and resilience. It creates space for boys to reflect on what it means to be a good man today and how they can show those values in everyday school life.

Through the programme, students explore how ideas about masculinity have changed over time, learn to question harmful messages they may encounter online, and build practical skills around topics like body image and healthy emotional expression.

A key part of the project is recognising and celebrating positive behaviour. Staff highlight moments when students demonstrate qualities such as kindness, respect, responsibility, and supporting others, and these are reinforced through the school’s rewards system.

We're confident that our Good Men Project aims to help boys grow into confident, thoughtful, and compassionate young men, while making a positive contribution to the school community.

The Empowered Girls Project

The Empowered Girls Project is a supportive and encouraging programme for female students that focuses on building confidence, critical awareness, and a strong sense of identity.

Throughout the programme, students explore how sexism and gender stereotypes can affect girls’ experiences, including the impact of beauty standards and social expectations. They learn practical ways to recognise and respond to harassment, set boundaries, and speak up for themselves and others.

The project also highlights the importance of community and solidarity, encouraging students to value their voices and support one another.

By the end of the programme, participants leave with greater self-confidence and a clearer understanding of the pressures they may face, along with the skills and awareness to navigate them with strength and self-belief.
